I was always the type of person that had to arrive at an appointment 10 minutes early, make a time schedule for every job I had, make a list for the grocery store and keep track of every minute for every thing on my schedule, so for me, I lived in a world of time management.
However, there are many people that have a problem with time. They run out of time for everything that they try to accomplish, the natural phrase that they have is, "I don’t have time for anything or I ran out of time.” Is this how you feel?
There are many tips and shortcuts to time management, the reason most of them are overlooked is that we tend to think that by doing some of these that we are wasting time. When in reality, by doing these simple steps, we become much more productive, not only in our home life but in our businesses as well.
Try these and see how your productivity will increase and your stress level will decrease.
1. Set a Goal
Make a list of everything that needs to be accomplished for that day. This will give you a starting point, a schedule of events and a time frame. Using a list to follow, you will never forget the tasks at hand and you will be able to see that you are getting the jobs accomplished. Goal setting on a daily or even an hourly basis is a must in order to succeed at time management.
2. Keep track of wasted time
We all need to take a break every once in a while during the day, but do you realize how many wasted minutes we tend to use up? Keeping on task is one of the faults of wasted time scheduling. Start a task and complete it and then you have earned your break. If it is a large task, break it down into smaller tasks and give yourself a break at the halfway point. Then keep track of wasted minutes, when they were unproductive and why.
You will then have an idea of how to eliminate these types of things from running your life. They are things that cause you stress and anxiety and should be banished from your day. You will see how unproductive they are and that you could use those minutes to accomplish tasks, giving you more time at the end of the day or an extra break when you have a long job to do.
3. Interruptions
It is inevitable that there are interruptions in our lives on a daily basis, but are they consuming time that we need to accomplish goals. If that is the case, it is time to set some rules such as; Let the ringing telephone go to the answer machine and return the call later and the neighbor or business associate that stops in will have to call and set a time that is available to you.
It may take people a little time to get used to the “new” you, but if you tell them tactfully, they will understand. Just let them know that you are trying something out to see if you can get your work accomplished faster.
Time management is the ability to reclaim the minutes in your day and to make them productive minutes and not time wasters.
Once the list is made and the goal set, you have total control over how it will be accomplished. You set the limits as to how your minutes in your day will be used.
Warn everyone that you have decided to relieve your stress, accomplish things in an organized way and see how long it takes for the rest of your fellow workers to ask for your help in setting up a time management list for them.
It makes everyday start out with a purpose and end with accomplishments that reduces stress, organizing your time and gives you a feeling of control.
Some of the reasons that we have a problem with depression, anxiety, stress, nervous stomachs etc. is because of having to hurry to do everything. We always get the feeling that we are behind, that we have to go faster and do better. These cause major medical problems in our lives.
With good time management, we are getting more done, in a relaxed state, because we have control over the things that need to be accomplished. We have a set goal that we know is achievable and therefore we relieve some of the stress in getting to our goal for the day.
By the end of the week, we find that we have accomplished our main goal and probably a little extra and now we know that we deserve to have the weekend off. It gives us extra time to enjoy with our families without the feeling that we are trying to beat the clock.
Then, if we apply this same system to the projects that we have at home, we will achieve the same result, mainly, time to do the things that we want to do and enjoy doing without feeling guilty.
Manage your time, manage your life and take control of the clock.
With time management, it will run on your schedule.
It will make life more enjoyable and that of your fellow workers, your family and most of all you.
Time management doesn’t cost us anything to put into effect but it can cost us a lot, if we don’t.
Watch how your disposition will change, it will be nice to be calm, laugh again, take the day off and be able to enjoy it, not feel guilty for wanting to enjoy life and not be tired at the end of a day, feel overworked and go home with a headache.
