We all look forward to retirement; but there is a drawback that we aren't ready for.
One day we are a name in the business world and workplace, in our minds, we had an identity, we were somebody. However, the next day we become John or Jane Doe, another member of the human race and some of us lose who we are.
There are about 77 million baby boomers that are either in the process of retiring or will be there within the next few years. What you make of retirement and how you deal with it is up to the individual.
We look at all of the things around the home that need to be added and fixed up and we think that it will take up a good deal of our time. Then add to that, all of the things that NOW we have time for, that we could never do before and we wonder how we are going to find time to fit it all in.
Ask some people that have retired in the last year and you will hear that it didn't take them as long as they thought that it would to get all of the odd jobs accomplished and that things that seemed important at one time no longer seem to be on the priority list of things to do.
How do we fight this feeling of nothingness? How do we stop ourselves from becoming stagnant? We have to talk to the 'inner being' and make them aware that our own mind may need organizing as well as our new lives.
Retirement can be more traumatic than people realize. It is a time of closing one door in our lives that we used for personal gain as far as purchasing furniture, a home, generating savings, raising children etc. Now what do we do? What is our next goal in life? Too many of us have not looked at that part of life. No one should ever run out of goals!

Get plenty of exercise, volunteer for things and groups whether it be to help kids, at your local church or hospital, picnics, events in your town, the red cross or many other places that you already have an interest in. Use your experiences in life to help educate others. Join a gardening group, wood careers group, help kids learn woodworking, the list is endless. Your knowledge is so precious and has taken a lifetime to learn, don't let it go to waste. One hour a week is better than nothing in a child's mind.
