Kids love to help cook and bake. Sure, there is a big mess, but if you can look at it like the things that you teach them now will be things they will need in the future, it will make the situation easier. Easy recipes that the kids can make themselves are one of the ways to achieve this. Find things that they can make, in a matter of minutes, and serve for supper or when friends come over. Once they get a few compliments, they will want to learn more.
Some of my kids' best memories are when we made fudge, chocolate pudding and chocolate milk popsicles. All are easy to make, take a minimal amount of effort and don't create a big mess, but the end result goes on for years.
