Fun Recipes for Camping
By Jan Hayner
Camping is one of the best summer past times there is,
whether it is in your own backyard, at a state park or a campground, What is even more fun is to have recipes that you can make over an open fire that don’t take long to make and there aren’t any dishes to do. Now that’s my kind of camping!
Anytime that I can get by without cooking, cleaning and dishes; I am really on vacation. So, as the type of grandma that I am I had to come up with ideas that helped me to achieve my goal and that meant no mess cooking recipes.
These are a few of the fun recipes we make when we go camping, The kind that the kids can make by themselves and you just have to sit back and watch the fire.
Apple Buns (great for breakfast or a dessert)
10 really large apples -peeled, cored and cut in big pieces
¾ cup Bisquik
4 Tbsp. of sugar
3 Tbsp of cinnamon
10 pieces of greased aluminum foil
In each piece of aluminum foil put 1 Tbsp. Bisquik, 1 tsp. sugar and stir in some of the apple. Wrap the aluminum foil around the ingredients leaving enough room for the steam to surround the mixture. Put in the fire for about 35 minutes and it is ready to eat.
The steam adds enough moisture that you don’t have to add a liquid to this. Makes 10 Apple Buns.
Baked Potato in a Can
Take the top off of a soda can, put in one medium size potato, cover with aluminum foil and put in the fire. That’s all there is to it. It takes about the same time that it would take if you put it in the oven. It is really good if you rub butter over the potato before you put it in the can.
Barbecued Shaved Ham
6 pieces of aluminum foil
1 lb. of shaved ham
1 bottle of Barbecue Sauce (your favorite kind)
6 rolls or buns
Lay out the aluminum foil and divide the ham equally between the 6 pieces. Pour barbecue sauce over the top of the ham. Fold the foil so it won’t leak and put in the fire for about 10 minutes. Take out and put ham on your rolls or buns and add what ever other ingredients that you like. A hearty sandwich and so easy to make when you want something warm and zesty.
Beef Dinner in a Pouch
1 lb. of ground beef
4 large potatoes-(peeled and chopped up)
2 cans of cream of mushroom soup or cream of celery soup
Onions-chopped ( if you like them)
Aluminum foil
Make the aluminum foil into a pouch shape. I usually cut a large rectangle piece of foil, add the ingredients and then fold the edges and roll them to make a pouch.
Divide the hamburger and make 4 hamburger patties and put one on each of the pieces of foil. On top of this add one of the potatoes, chopped up and ¼ of the chopped onion. Fold the foil around the ingredients and cook on the grill for about 45 minutes, turning them every 15 minutes. Cut open down the middle of the foil and dig in, they are great. But I warn you to make extras, when you have one you will want more.
How about a PIZZA
Just because we are camping doesn’t mean we have to miss out on the Pizza Party, invite the neighbors over and they will think you are ingenious.
¾ to 1 lb. Ground beef
1 medium onion-chopped fine
8 oz. crescent rolls
8 oz. pizza sauce
4 oz. can of mushrooms chopped and drained
Small can ripe olives-drained and chopped
1 cup of mozzarella shredded cheese
Add any other ingredients that you like on your pizza
This works the best if you use a cast iron skillet, it turns out better.
Brown the hamburger in a pan ahead of time, season with salt and pepper and add the onion to brown. Drain off the fat on paper towels. Separate the crescent rolls into triangles and put in the frying pan with all of the points facing the middle of the pan, now press together to form a circle in the pan and about ½ to 1 inch up the side of the pan. Spread half of the pizza sauce on top of the rolls and spoon on the ground beef. Cover with all of the rest of your ingredients and put the remaining pizza sauce over the tops of this. Sprinkle the shredded cheese on top. Put the pan on your grill top and cover the pan either with a cover or aluminum foil , now put over the campfire. Let cook for about 20-30 minutes (until crust is brown) and you will have a campers pizza.
These are fun ideas to make at your next campfire outing, cook out in the backyard, as well as to take along camping, the kids love it and so will mom.
