I Have an Organizing Problem
By Jan Hayner
“No, it’s not the bedroom, bathroom of den; it’s my entire house. Every room, every closet and every little corner in-between.
My New Years resolution is to get control of my life and to organize everything. My only problem is: I don’t know how! Sure it sounds easy to do and yes, I do have an idea of how it should look when I get done. But it is all such a disaster that I don’t know where to start.”
This is part of a letter that I received from one of my new clients. She had the basic idea down real good, the only problem is that she was looking at the ‘whole picture’ and scaring herself half to death.
Organizing should be done a little at a time for a number of reasons:
Start out with small projects that don’t take much time, let’s say no more than 10 minutes for one project.
Make a list of all of those items that will only take 10 minutes to do, so that you have a list to cross the jobs off of.
The reason for this is that you will be able to see an accomplishment two fold.
1) you will see it with your eyes when the job is finished,
2) and you will see it on paper when you cross it off of your list.
We all like to feel that we haven’t wasted our time and we want to ‘see’ what we have done in a hour, morning or a days time. Self satisfaction and gratification can give us the drive to do more, organize our time and get rid of the stress of not being in control.
